Bread Baking 101

Lindy is so talented at making a presentation.  She has demonstrated for our group before when she made soap.  Her home always feels warm and inviting.  As a homemaking guru, you can find her secrets and homemade products at Sweet Harvest Homestead.

This cake was designed and created by Lindy.  My mom had this same set of gnomes from the 1950’s.

Even the artwork that spells L-O-V-E in the backdrop was created by her hand.

“Baking bread is a lot like growing your faith in the Lord, Carrie Louise. You mix together the best ingredients you can find and wait for the mixture to mature, but it’s the heat of the oven that makes it something of worth and substance. The same way the tribulations of this world mature a persons faith.”

grindingwheatLindy introduced wheat kernels.  She uses hard white wheat grain for bread and soft white wheat grain for biscuits.  Red wheat kernels are for heartier breads.  Taste ultimately depends on where the wheat is grown.

“Freshly ground wheat is a nutritionally superior product because the vitamin E & B as well as the Wheat Bran stay intact.  You get a burst of all of those nutrients when you grind it yourself.” – Lindy Sellers

She taught us that grinding preserves the wheat kernel and the vitamin E.  But you need to make it rather quickly as raw wheat only has a shelf life of about 3 days.

Common ingredients seem rather mundane until mixed with yeast.  They become alive, magical, and hearty.

tastingdoughWe taste the gooey dough before she put it into the loaf pans.  The gluten is chewy.

Can you smell the delicious hot bread coming out of the oven? Freshbread

“The smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight…
[Breadmaking is] one of those almost hypnotic businesses, like a dance from some ancient ceremony. It leaves you filled with one of the world’s sweetest smells… there is no chiropractic treatment, no Yoga exercise, no hour of meditation in a music-throbbing chapel. that will leave you emptier of bad thoughts than this homely ceremony of making bread.”

wwbreadShe blessed each family with a loaf of homemade whole wheat bread.  Thank you, Lindy!

“And I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves…” Genesis 18:5

Our loaf was gone in less than a day.  Can you blame us?

Do you have any bread baking tips?

Genesis 18:5

and I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.”
